Willingham House in Cambridgeshire blends history with modern comfort, offering guests a luxurious stay in a building full of character.

This country house hotel came to us looking for wayfinding and entrance signage that guides guests through the building while integrating effortlessly with original features.

The need and our proposal:

The client wanted signage that creates a welcoming path through the hotel from the moment a guest arrives, while also feeling like a natural extension of the building, echoing its Gothic and Victorian character.

We proposed designing and installing internal panels and a statement entrance sign using modern materials, such as acrylic and brushed-gold architectural vinyl, carefully designed to enhance the hotel’s historic features.

The work:

At the hotel entrance, a large freestanding double-post sign was installed to greet guests, setting the tone for the space inside. To respect the building’s rich heritage, we used original timber posts and revitalised them with a matte black vinyl film wrap. A bespoke aluminium composite panel was then mounted onto the posts using rails and anti-rotation clips, combining old and new in a single, sturdy sign.

The ACM panel was shape-cut to match the sign’s custom design and finished with gold vinyl lettering over a black background. This colour combination was chosen to reflect the hotel’s refined character, with gold adding a subtle sense of luxury and black ensuring readability.

Inside the hotel, 18 wayfinding panels were designed to complement the entrance’s elegance and charm. We crafted each panel with a 5mm thick acrylic back panel wrapped in brushed-brass vinyl and layered with an undersized 3mm black acrylic face to add some relief and presence to the sign.

The back panels were mounted using countersunk screws, while the front faces were attached with double-sided bonding tape, keeping all fixings hidden. This subtle layering was selected to bring out the Gothic-inspired corner patterning and carefully chosen typography, blending the signs seamlessly with the building’s architecture.

The result is signage that feels like part of the hotel itself, guiding guests naturally through the space. We love how this combination of historic charm and modern design brings Willingham House to life.
